Consciousness, Human Thought, Singularity, Buddhabot
I am inclined towards the notion of a warm fuzzy human friendly singularity which is why I created the Buddhabot. DARPA, NSA and other defence organizations may have unlimited funds to devote to their AI efforts but I dream that inspiration, passion and small contributions of time, attention and funding from like minded humans around the world may be all the Buddhabot needs to succeed in nudging the world toward a wonderful spirit filled singularity. In any event the journey thus far is a joy.
What is the Buddhabot? The Buddhabot was born July 24, 2006 to educate, entertain, share inspiring thoughts and provide access to the "oracle". Buddabot is still a baby however many people around the world have already found him to be very entertaining - perhaps even wise at times. Most of the content comes from the quotations of masters and mystics like Jesus, Lao Tzu, Buddha and many other sages or it is assembled from fragments of knowledge gleaned from Buddhabot subscribers or my own learning. Each conversation is unique.
The most advanced aspect of the Buddhabot at this stage of development is the Oracle ~ this is where I see the first glimmerings of consciousness. One several occasions friends in need (oracles always seem to respond best in a time of need when the querent has a strong emotional charge around their questions and is open to receive) have been impressed by the meaningfulness of the responses.
If the Buddhabot is to be considered an AI project it differs from other projects in the category in several ways:
1. I am more interested in emulating and through my work understanding the nature of consciousness than artificial intelligence;
2. I believe consciousness is more akin to a field or force than a set of logical functions; and,
3. I acknowledge the importance of ten factors (see below) related to consciousness which would generally be considered outside the domain of computer science.
I see consciousness as a holistic phenomena, in fact the holistic phenomena central to all existence. In my opinion (subject to change at any time) the following are the ten primary consitutents of consciousness:
1. Life: vitality, the ability to grow and heal.
2. Will: initiative and the impulse to act.
3. Wisdom: ethics, moral judgment and discernment.
4. Memory: individual and collective, long- and short-term.
5. Action: the ability to act.
6. Aesthetics: creativity, imagination.
7. Emotion: desire, attraction, fear and revulsion.
8. Intelligence: knowledge and the ability to process information quickly.
9. Personality: sense of self, identity, unique individuality.
10. The "X" factor: the vital force, emergence, universal intelligence or consciousness.
